Many people find it very frustrating how unreliable people are today.  We live in a fast paced world with lot’s of potential for things to go wrong, but that is no excuse to not be reliable.

Being reliable means to do what you said you were going to do in the time you said you would do it.  If you do this then people will rely on you because they know they can trust you.

Most of us don’t even attempt to be reliable.  We make promises on time that is unrealistic and we know we will never achieve.  All this does is create a gap in the trust with that person.  To get away from this you have to start watching the words that you use.  Do you say to people “I’ll be there in just a second.”  Or “in a minute” and then take ten or twenty minutes to get there?

If you start to be more careful with the language you use and then make sure that you don’t break your word you will find that people treat you differently.  There used to be a time when our word’s were our bonds.  A person that tries to live that way will find that they are able to quickly gain the respect and trust needed from others.

Of course even the most reliable people slip up every now and then.  Everyone makes mistakes, but a reliable person takes responsibility and contacts all parties to let them know that a change of time for delivery is needed.  How you handle these situations can be even more powerful in building trust then how you handle things when everything goes smoothly.

How reliable are you?  Spend the next couple of days listening to your words and see how many times you break them. Then start working on living up to your word and see how your business and life changes.
